On June 26, the Day of the Crimean Tatar National Flag

Today Ukrainians together with Crimean Tatars around the globe are celebrating Crimean Tatar Flag Day!

The Day of the Crimean Tatar National Flag is the day of honouring the national flag of Crimean Tatars, an indigenous people of Crimea. Since 2010, it has been marked on 26 June.

For the first time, the Crimean Tatar flag was adopted by the Qurultay of the Crimean Tatars (the highest representative body of the Crimean Tatars) in 1917, after the February Revolution in Bakhchisarai. It was updated on June 30, 1991, after Ukraine’s independence was declared. Today, the Crimean Tatars have their political symbols: the emblem, the flag and the anthem.

The Crimean Tatar flag is a banner of blue color with a gold color “Tamga” (signifying the ruling Giray dynasty during the period of the Crimean khanate). The blue color of the flag represents a clear sky (kök) and freedom (azatlıq) of Crimean people's life, which is reflected in its culture, history and holidays. Yellow color of Tamga is a color of gold (altın), which is a symbol (timsal) of spiritual and physical purity. The Tamga, according to the opinion of many researchers, symbolizes a pair of scales (teraze), the power of justice (adalete quvet)".

Since the beginning of the occupation of the Ukrainian Crimea by Russia and the intensification of repression in relation to the indigenous population of the peninsula, the main events of the Day of the Crimean Tatar flag are held in the mainland Ukraine (in particular, in Kyiv) by the Crimean Tatar public organizations with the support and coordination of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people. For several years already, the festive events have been held under the slogan "Two flags - one country".

The harmony of the colors of the national and state flags is a symbolic sign of unanimity of the two peoples, the unity of their forces in a fight with the aggressor.

Today, Crimean Tatar flags are raised all over Ukraine and in Ukrainian embassies abroad, honouring this important symbol of our Crimean indigenous friends.

On the occasion of this Day (Bayraq künü), diplomats of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Cyprus will also join the events to be held with a purpose of popularization of the Day of Crimean Tatar flag, the history, and culture of the Crimean Tatars under the slogan "Two flags - one country".
