Thirty-five years ago, Ukrainians restored their independent state, building on more than a thousand years of statehood — from Rus to the Cossack Hetmanate, the Ukrainian People’s Republic, and the modern Ukrainian state.

The Declaration of Independence in 1991 was not the beginning of our history, but its continuation. By restoring the independence first declared over a century ago, we affirm the unbroken thread of Ukrainian statehood.

Ukrainians are united by a shared past. Across generations we have preserved our language, culture, dignity, and unyielding desire for freedom. This bond continues to strengthen our nation as we defend ourselves against Russia’s full-scale invasion.

For Ukrainians, independence is not only a historic achievement. It is a commitment upheld every day. Every day Ukrainians defend, rebuild, innovate, teach, volunteer, and care for one another.

We are also united by the future we are building together: a free, secure, innovative, and prosperous European state — a member of the EU and NATO.

On this day we celebrate while remembering that neither freedom nor independence can ever be taken for granted. We honour our defenders and pay tribute to all those who have given their lives for Ukraine’s independence.

Ukraine seeks peace and remains ready to take meaningful and realistic steps to achieve it. Lasting peace, however, requires increased pressure on the aggressor: stronger sanctions, continued military assistance, and enhanced protection of Ukrainian cities against ballistic missile attacks.

We are grateful to the Republic of Cyprus and the Cypriot people for their steadfast support. We also thank every partner who continues to stand with Ukraine.

Today Ukraine is not only defending itself — it is making a vital contribution to the security of Europe. We have become a security partner and a drone superpower, ready to develop long-term cooperation and share our unique experience and battlefield-tested solutions.

Together with our friends in the Republic of Cyprus, we continue to stand for freedom, justice, and a peaceful European future.
