Bilateral Relations between Ukraine and the Republic of Cyprus

Recognition of Ukraine’s Independence by the Republic of Cyprus: December 27, 1991.

Establishment of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and the Republic of Cyprus: February 19, 1992.

Existing Bilateral Authorities of a High Level:

The bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and the Republic of Cyprus is developing in the spirit of mutual understanding and trust, which is facilitated by the closeness of the two countries' positions on many topical issues of international relations, as well as on the spiritual closeness of the Ukrainians and Cypriots.

Cyprus supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, demonstrates unwavering solidarity with Ukraine amid Russia`s war of aggression.

The bilateral political dialogue is held on a regular basis between the leaders of Ukraine and Cyprus within the framework of international events, as well as in a bilateral format.

Bilateral high level meetings and visits

Bilateral high-level political dialogue:

The first official visit at the highest level took place on July 3-5, 2011 when President Demetris Christofias paid an official visit to Ukraine. This became a significant event which witnessed the transition of bilateral relations to the highest political level. It also gave a significant boost to intensifying political dialogue as well as deepening of Ukrainian-Cypriot bilateral cooperation in all spheres of mutual interest.
The first in the history of Ukrainian-Cypriot relations official visit of the President of Ukraine to the Republic of Cyprus took place on November 8-9, 2012.
On June 10-12, 2010 the Head of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine paid a visit to the Republic of Cyprus. During this visit he took part in the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament.
On November 9-11, 2010 the President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus (Parliament) paid a visit to Ukraine.
On December 14-16, 2011 the Head of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine visited the Republic of Cyprus. During this visit the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation between the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the House of Representatives was signed.

Starting with the Revolution of Dignity (February 2014), the following bilateral contacts took place:

Ioannis Kasoulides took part in the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected President of Ukraine Mr. P.Poroshenko;
On February 12, 2015 – a meeting of President of Ukraine Mr. P.Poroshenko with President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. N.Anastasiades during the European Council meeting in Brussels;
On December 11-12, 2015 – an official visit of President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. N.Anastasiades to Ukraine. During this visit the President of the Republic of Cyprus met with the President of Ukraine, the Prime-Minister of Ukraine and the Head of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Parliament);
On March 29, 2017 – a working meeting of President of Ukraine Mr. P.Poroshenko with President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. N.Anastasiades in Malta;
On March 19, 2017 – a working meeting of Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mr. P.Klimkin with President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. N.Anastasiades during the 127th Session of the Committee of Ministers (Council of Europe) at ministerial level in Nicosia;
On September 28, 2020 – a telephone conversation between Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mr. D.Kuleba and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. N.Christodoulides;
On November 11, 2020 - a telephone conversation between Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mr. V.Bodnar and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. K.Korneliou.
On June 23, 2021 – the third round of political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Republic of Cyprus took place in Kyiv (Ukraine). From the MFA of Ukraine Mr. Vasyl Bodnar, the Deputy Minister took place in the meeting. From the MFA of Cyprus Mr. Kornelios Korneliou, the Permanent Secretary took place in the consultations.
On June 23, 2022 - a telephone conversation between President of Ukraine Mr. Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Nicos Anastasiades.
On September 19, 2022 - a working meeting of Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mr. Dmytro Kuleba with Minister or Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Ioannis Kasoulides on the sidelines of the UN GA in New-York.
On January 12, 2023 - a telephone conversation between President of Ukraine Mr. Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Nicos Anastasiades.
On February 13, 2023 - a telephone conversation between President of Ukraine Mr. Volodymyr Zelenskyy and newly elected President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Nicos Christodoulides.
On March 23, 2023 - a telephone conversation between Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mr. Dmytro Kuleba and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Constantinos Kombos.
On May 13, 2023 - a meeting between Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mr. Dmytro Kuleba with Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Constantinos Kombos on the sidelines of the Informal meeting of foreign affairs ministers in Stockholm.
