In the framework of participation in the International Conference of the Council of Europe "Securing democracy through education" on March 22-23, 2017, Nicosia, the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Liliya Hrynevych met with the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus Costas Kadis and the Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Educational Affairs and Culture Kyriacos Hadjiyiannis on 21 March.
During the meeting with Minister of Education and Culture of Cyprus the current state and prospects of Ukrainian-Cyprus cooperation in the sphere of education were discussed, including preparation for the signing of the Agreement on mutual recognition of documents on education and academic degrees. Two Ministers agreed to intensify the efforts on preparation of the draft Agreement aiming at its signing in the nearest future. Also they discussed practice of implementation of double degrees that currently exist in cooperation with other European countries. Liliya Hrynevych invited her Cypriot counterpart to Ukraine for signing the Agreement.
An exchange of views and information on ways of reforms in secondary education in both countries was held. The main discussed issues were concerning evaluation, training and certification of teachers. Minister Hrynevych informed in details the Cypriot colleague about the changes that are expected in the Ukrainian education system.
Minister of Education of Science of Ukraine expressed appreciation for the Cyprus's continued support of territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. In particular, she informed about challenges of internally displaced persons in Ukraine who need help and integration into Ukrainian society and raised the problem of educating children displaced from the occupied territories to other regions of the country. They also discussed inclusive education which is very well developed in Cyprus.
In the context of displaced children, Minister of Education and Culture of Cyprus Mr. Kadis expressed readiness of the Cypriot side to accept Ukrainian children at summer camps of the Ministry in Prodromos.
The same day, the Minister met with the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Culture of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus Kyriacos Hadjiyiannis. During the meeting the legislative framework of reforming education systems both in Ukraine in Cyprus were discussed.
Minister informed about the current situation in the East of Ukraine related to the Russian aggression against Ukraine. In particular, she stressed on financial expenses for defense, social protection of internally displaced persons.
Mr. Hadjiyiannis expressed support and understanding of the situation of occupation of the territory because of the same problem in his country. Minister of Education of Science of Ukraine expressed appreciation for the Cyprus's continued support of territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.
They exchanged views on human rights and stressed the importance of implementing such an important subject of human rights in the school curriculum. In addition, the Minister stressed the importance of competences for democratic society.
