The event, organized by the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence under the patronage of CY2026.EU, draws attention to the illegal trade in cultural property, which continues to threaten heritage, identity, and stability in various regions. From the looting of archaeological sites to the illicit trafficking of sacred and historically significant objects, as the organizers note, this global challenge requires coordinated and forward-looking responses.

In his speech, Ambassador Dr.Sergii Nizhynskyi noted that Ukraine’s example in matters of cultural heritage preservation is both illustrative and compellingly demonstrates that cultural heritage is inseparable from the identity of people and its future.

The Ambassador of Italy in Cyprus, Ms. Antonella Cavallari, also emphasized in her remarks that preserving Ukraine’s cultural heritage is a shared European responsibility.

Meanwhile, the head of ICOM Ukraine, Anastasiia Cherednychenko, delivered a presentation titled “Protection of Cultural Heritage During Crisis and War,” in which she spoke about the practical experience of Ukrainians, and she also took part in a panel discussion with colleagues from other countries.

The symposium will continue tomorrow, and speakers will raise issues related to heritage in the countries of the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
