The President met Head of Cypriot Orthodox Church Archbishop Chrysostomos II. In the course of the meeting the Head of State noted that Ukrainian-Cypriot relations were traditionally friendly and had deep historical roots. He emphasized that the development and strengthening of our relations had always been facilitated by common spiritual basis – Orthodox belief.
Viktor Yanukovych highly evaluated the fact that the Head of Cypriot Orthodox Church maintains contacts with the representatives of Ukrainian Orthodox Church. At the same time, the Head of State noted that Ukraine unites many peoples with different beliefs. In that context, he emphasized the importance of the Council of churches that facilitates spiritual reconciliation of all Ukrainian confessions.
Speaking of pilgrimage of Ukrainian citizens to Christian relics, Viktor Yanukovych stressed the importance of permanent connection with the sights and history of Christianity.
He also recalled that recently the Yard of Athos St. Panteleimon Monastery at St. Michael's Church had been opened in Kyiv.
The Head of State invited Archbishop Chrysostomos II to visit Ukraine.
