On April 17-18, 2018, the President of the Ukrainian World Congress Mr. Eugene Czolij and the Director of the UWC Representation in the international organizations Ms. Maryna Yaroshevych paid a visit to Cyprus.
During the visit, the UWC delegation met with the leadership of the Republic of Cyprus, senior officials, deputies, experts, diplomats and the Ukrainian community.
On April 17, several meetings were held with the President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Syllouris, the Presidential Commissioner Mr. Photis Photiou, Leader of the AKEL-Left-New Forces parliamentary group Mr. Andros Kyprianou, representatives of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, professors of the University of Nicosia.
During the meetings important issues of global security, challenges and reaction of the international community, Russian aggression against Ukraine, the deployment of a peacekeeping mission to the Donbas and a monitoring mission to Crimea; economic, humanitarian and technical assistance to Ukraine; and highlight the progress of reform in Ukraine, European integration, bilateral relations between Ukraine and Cyprus were discussed among other issues.
On the same day also the meeting with the leadership of the Association of Ukrainians in Cyprus the “Society of Ukrainian-Cypriot Friendship” was held. The sides discussed the activities of the association, further plans and prospects for enlargement, as well as the establishment of cooperation between the UWC and the Ukrainians of Cyprus.
On April 18, meetings with the Leader of the DISY ruling party as well as the delegation of the House of Representatives to the Inter-Parliamentary Union Mr. Averof Neofytou, the vice-president of the EDEK party Mrs. Maria Vasiliadou, the Director of the Department of Bilateral Relations with the countries of Eastern Europe, Western Balkans and Central Asia of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Vassos Chamberlain, the Honorary Consul Ukraine in the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Alexis Photiades and the leadership of the US Embassy in Cyprus were held.
The delegation visited the "green line" which divides Cyprus and is under the control of UN peacekeeping force.
