Day of Ukrainian embroidery in Cyprus and presentation of Ukrainian society

On May 11, 2017, a celebrative event dedicated to the Ukrainian embroidery (Vyshyvanka) was held in Nicosia with the participation of  diplomatic corps, representatives of business, scientific and religious circles of Cyprus, Cypriots and  Ukrainian community.  

During the event, the newly established by Ukrainians in Cyprus Association "Society of Ukrainian-Cypriot friendship" was presented. Celebrations began with the speech of Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Borys Humeniuk. He stressed on the importance of registration of the association of Ukrainians, which created the basis for the official activities of Ukrainians in Cyprus, aimed at spreading Ukrainian culture and traditions in Cyprus and promoting Ukraine in the Republic of Cyprus as well as intensification of Ukrainian-Cypriot cultural and humanitarian cooperation.

The participants had an honor to be greeted by esteemed guest the Minister of Finance of Ukraine Olexandr Danyliuk, who was in Cyprus with working visit. The Minister congratulated the Ukrainian community and stressed that Ukrainians, despite living far from their Homeland remain to be true patriots and strongly support their native country for its benefit, development and prosperity.

The President the Society of Ukrainian-Cypriot friendship Mrs. Larysa Kalinichenko expressed gratitude to everyone involved and contributed to the development of community and support of the official registration. She also described the activities and tasks of the Society, aimed at promoting in Cyprus of Ukrainian culture, history and traditions, promoting the positive image of our country, supporting spiritual and social life of Ukrainians living in Cyprus, as well as the strengthening of friendly relations between Ukraine and Cyprus.

During the festival a presentation of traditional Ukrainian embroidery vyshyvanka was held. History and current trends of Ukrainian embroidery, techniques, styles, patterns and meaning were presented to the quests.

The official part of the event was enriched with singing performances by talented Ukrainian girls Nadiya Tsarenko- Nicolau  and Maria Volovod-Christodoulidou.
