The flame is traditionally brought to the island by the Plast of Cyprus. For this, the scouts go to Vienna, where the international handover of the Flame of Peace takes place.
At the event in Nicosia, the flame handover ceremony was combined with the Liturgy, which was celebrated by Father Vasylij Zakharus.
Ambassador Sergyi Nizhynskyi congratulated the community on this event and thanked the scouts for observing and preserving traditions.
A carol was also sung in the church, and the fire was distributed outside to symbolically illuminate the darkness.
The tradition of the Bethlehem Flame of Peace dates back to 1986, when the Austrian broadcaster ORF launched a Christmas campaign to support children undergoing treatment. Within a few years, the initiative was taken up by the scouts. Since the 1990s, the Ukrainian Plast has begun to set out every year to fetch the Fire to bring it to people in need of warmth and support.
